WELFARE ISN'T KIND
When I was a young civil rights worker, I was fortunate enough to meet Dr. Martin Luther King and James Farmer, founder of the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE). I learned that one can not be both dependent and free. The contemporary welfare state makes people dependent slaves of government. This is why Star Parker, a former welfare mom, wrote a book titled "Uncle Sam's Plantation" . I spent many evenings visiting homes where child abuse or neglect were reported. The vast majority of the time the the families depended on welfare.
I came to believe that only a thriving economy and the empowerment that comes with earning your own living could end the spiritual degradation I witnessed and the abuse and neglect which it produces. The Talmud states, "If you are kind to the cruel you end up being cruel to the kind". I often paraphrase it as, if you are kind when you should be cruel you end up being cruel when you should be kind. It may seem kind to extend and and expand welfare. In fact it only perpetuates cruelty. I care deeply about the people I serves as a social worker. I want to expand OPPORTUNITY and replace welfare with JOBS!! That is why I am a free market conservative and a proud Republican.
